Bayesian vocabulary tests

چکیده

This paper proposes a new way of looking at productive vocabulary in L1 and L2 speakers. An experiment was conducted where 160 participants provided six words for five different picture prompts they were presented with. Data from this minimal test analysed using Bayesian statistics order to decide whether set responses generated by an speaker or advanced learner. Results obtained provide some interesting insights into the viability tests (small sets can carry large amounts information on use), as well indications how methods could help us explore vocabularies speakers proficiency levels.

Basic vocabulary and Bayesian phylolinguistics
Donohue et al.’s critique of our work on the origins and spread of the Austronesian language family is marred by misunderstandings of our approach. We respond to these by noting that our Bayesian phylogenetic approach: (1) distinguishes between retentions and innovations probabilistically, (2) focuses on basic vocabulary not ‘the lexicon’, (3) eliminates known loanwords, (4) produces results th...
متن کاملAutomatic Generation of English Vocabulary Tests
This paper presents a novel method for automatically generating English vocabulary tests using TOEFL vocabulary questions as a model. English vocabulary questions in TOEFL is a multiple-choice question consisting of four components: a target word, a reading passage, a correct answer and distractors. Given a target word, we generate a reading passage from Web texts retrieved from the Internet, a...
متن کاملBayesian two-sample tests
In this paper, we present two classes of Bayesian approaches to the twosample problem. Our first class of methods extends the Bayesian t-test to include all parametric models in the exponential family and their conjugate priors. Our second class of methods uses Dirichlet process mixtures (DPM) of such conjugate-exponential distributions as flexible nonparametric priors over the unknown distribu...
متن کاملUniformly Most Powerful Bayesian Tests.
Uniformly most powerful tests are statistical hypothesis tests that provide the greatest power against a fixed null hypothesis among all tests of a given size. In this article, the notion of uniformly most powerful tests is extended to the Bayesian setting by defining uniformly most powerful Bayesian tests to be tests that maximize the probability that the Bayes factor, in favor of the alternat...

Consider the conditionally independent hierarchical model (CIHM) where observations y i are independently distributed from f (y i j i), the parameters i are independently distributed from distributions g(j), and the hyperparameters are distributed according to a distribution h(). The posterior distribution of all parameters of the CIHM can be eeciently simulated by Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCM...
